AWGU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA STUDENTS ASSOCIATION COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD

The Awgu Local Government Area Students Association (ALGASA) joined the global community to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child, with a sensitization program and distribution of hygiene items to students of Girls Secondary School Agbogugu.

The event, held in conjunction with the Student Affairs Division of Awgu Local Government Area, aimed to promote awareness on the importance of education for the girl child and address pressing issues affecting their well-being. Hon. Comr. Obinna A. Okpara, Special Assistant to the Executive Chairman of AWGU LGA on Student Affairs, kicked off the program.

Favour Sylvanus Okeoma, a renowned women’s rights activist and former Student Union Government (SUG) president of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), delivered a keynote address. She emphasized the significance of education in empowering the girl child and encouraged students to take their studies seriously. Okeoma also addressed the issue of girl child marriage, urging students to prioritize their education.

Dr. Obasi Kachi, former Vice President of ALGASA, conducted an interactive session on personal hygiene, focusing on best practices for maintaining cleanliness, especially during adolescence.

ALGASA National President, Hon. Comr. Obinta Juliet, who also serves as Special Assistant to the Awgu LG Chairman on Student Affairs, addressed the issues of rape, incest, and other vices affecting the girl child. She emphasized the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for girls to thrive.

The association distributed essential hygiene items, including sanitary pads, soap, toothbrushes, shaving sticks, tissue paper, wipes, hypo, and disinfectants, to help students maintain personal hygiene.

The Senior Prefect of the school expressed gratitude on behalf of the students and staff, thanking ALGASA for the gifts and words of encouragement. The Principal also appreciated the visit, encouraging the students to take advantage of the sensitization program.

Distinguished guests and officials present included Comr. Ohakwe Kingsley, Comr. Udeh Kennedy Ezinna, Comr. Uzodinma Ifeanyi, Comr. George Coco Nnanna, Hon. Comr. Valentine Odunje Okonta, Comr. Nwafior Obiora Miracle, Amb. Okafor Joseph, and Dr. Obasi Kachi.
