According to the Hon. Commissioner for Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Dame Ugochi Madueke, masquerades are a vital part of Enugu’s cultural fabric, designed to foster unity, spirituality, and communal harmony. “Violence has no place in these sacred traditions,” she emphasized.

To address this issue, the Ministry is working closely with relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible for these heinous acts are brought to justice. Additionally, the Ministry is in discussions with custodians of culture across the state to strengthen safeguards during cultural festivals to prevent future occurrences of such tragic incidents.

In light of this, the Ministry will be reviewing the guidelines for cultural festivals and implementing stricter regulations for the conduct of masquerades, ensuring that the safety and well-being of participants and spectators remain paramount.

The Ministry calls on all stakeholders, including traditional rulers, community leaders, and cultural custodians, to cooperate with the government in restoring the integrity of Enugu State’s cultural celebrations and maintaining peace and order during festivals.

The Enugu State Government remains committed to promoting and preserving its cultural heritage in a manner that is respectful, peaceful, and inclusive. “We ask for the public’s cooperation in maintaining this vision,” Dame Madueke stated.
