The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, October 1, as a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day anniversary.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the government.

He emphasized the need for Nigerians to reflect on the labor of their heroes past and be inspired for the tasks ahead, realizing that a united Nigeria is key to building a better future.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, had earlier unveiled the schedule for the 2024 Independence Day celebration. The celebration kicked off with a World Press Conference on September 26, 2024.

An Inter-Ministerial Committee was inaugurated on September 19 to oversee the celebration, planning and executing activities to honor Nigeria’s independence. The committee was inaugurated by Hadiza Usman, Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, on behalf of the SGF.

Akume emphasized that the celebration will be simple and low-key, reflecting the current challenging circumstances the country faces.

Nigeria gained independence from British rule on October 1, 1960. This anniversary serves as a reminder of the country’s progress and unity
