ENUGU STATE MINISTRY OF HEALTH COLLABORATES WITH WHO AND UNICEF TO COMBAT DIABETES

The Enugu State Ministry of Health launched a diabetes awareness initiative, partnering with the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. This collaborative effort engaged 1,700 women across 17 local government areas.

The initiative was announced during Her Excellency Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah’s monthly prayers at Okpara Square, Enugu. Mrs. Oby Agbo, Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Program Manager, delivered a comprehensive lecture highlighting diabetes’ impact on blood sugar regulation.

Agbo emphasized recognizing symptoms: frequent thirst/urination, fatigue, vision changes, and encouraged regular screening. She differentiated between Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes, providing actionable prevention strategies.

Dr. Adaeze Ugwu, WHO Enugu State Coordinator, addressed cholera prevention, promoting healthier choices. This integrated approach acknowledges diabetes’ interconnection with other health concerns.

Commissioner Mrs. Ngozi Eni expressed gratitude to Her Excellency Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, the health team and participating women. World Diabetes Day, November 14th, promotes global awareness.
