Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has explained why he advised former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, against visiting the state, citing concerns over protocol and security. In an interview with TVC News, Governor Alia criticized Obi for not following proper channels, particularly for failing to inform him about his planned visit.
Alia rejected Obi’s claim that he had attempted to contact him prior to the visit, stating that if Obi couldn’t reach him directly, there were other channels, including his Chief of Staff, Secretary to the State Government, and Principal Private Secretary.
The governor emphasized the importance of understanding the intent behind any visit, particularly to vulnerable populations like IDPs. “If you’re bringing food to the IDPs, I need to know what kind of aid you’re offering. There are protocols in place for a reason,” he said.
Alia cautioned against politicizing the IDP situation, stating, “I am here with my people through their suffering and sorrow. People should not use the IDP crisis for political gain. I’m on the ground, and I know what the people need.”
Obi had initially scheduled a visit to Benue, planning to engage in courtesy calls and visit IDP camps and health facilities. However, the state government issued a statement urging against unscheduled visits, citing security concerns, prompting Obi to cancel his trip. Obi expressed disappointment over what he saw as political interference in his charitable efforts.
