Awgu LGA Chairman, Hon. Uchenna Okolo Leads Urgent Action on Gully Erosion Along Awgu–Oji River Road

The Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, has taken swift and decisive action to tackle one of the most pressing infrastructural challenges confronting the area, the rapidly expanding gully erosion site along the Awgu–Oji River Road, a major link route connecting communities across Enugu and Anambra States.

In a proactive move on Wednesday, Hon. Okolo personally led a high-powered technical inspection team to the affected site to assess the level of damage and chart a sustainable solution. The delegation included Engr. Faoud, the Area Manager of Setraco Construction Company, the FERMA Site Manager, and the Chairman of Oji River Local Government Area.

During the inspection, the team conducted an on-site evaluation of the erosion’s depth and its potential threat to the road network and adjoining settlements. Experts from Setraco and FERMA briefed the local government chairmen on the immediate and long-term engineering measures required to stabilize the area and prevent further deterioration.

Describing the situation as “urgent and alarming,” Hon. Okolo emphasized the importance of collective intervention beyond local boundaries, noting that the road serves as a vital economic and social lifeline between the two LGAs.

“This kind of problem requires collective expertise. We are working together, crossing local government boundaries, to immediately analyze the situation and determine a sustainable solution to protect this vital road,” Hon. Okolo stated.

He further assured residents that his administration is in constant communication with relevant state and federal agencies, particularly FERMA and the Ministry of Works, to ensure a coordinated engineering response that would permanently resolve the problem rather than offer temporary relief.

Hon. Okolo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to proactive governance, stressing that issues of infrastructure, safety, and community resilience remain at the center of his development agenda for Awgu.

“Our commitment to keeping our infrastructure safe and resilient is absolute. We will continue to act swiftly on issues that affect our people’s safety, mobility, and economic well-being,” he affirmed.

He also commended the Chairman of Oji River LGA for his collaborative spirit, describing the joint visit as a demonstration of inter-LGA cooperation and a shared responsibility toward the region’s sustainable development.

The inspection visit ended with a resolution to mobilize immediate technical assessment and design for remedial works while awaiting broader intergovernmental intervention.

The statement concluded with Hon. Okolo’s signature development slogan:
“Tomorrow Is Here!”
