ENUGU STATE GOVERNMENT CLARIFIES AWGU–OJI RIVER ROAD COLLAPSE, ASSURES PUBLIC OF PROMPT INTERVENTION

The Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure has responded to reports circulating on social media regarding the collapse of a section of the Awgu–Oji River Road.

In a public statement released through its Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Ngene, the Ministry clarified that the affected road is a Federal Road under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Works, and not a state-managed project.

Following the incident, a high-powered delegation comprising the Federal Controller of Works, officials of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), the contractor handling the project, representatives of the Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, and the Chairmen of Awgu and Oji River Local Government Areas visited the site to assess the situation and deliberate on immediate remedial measures.

The Ministry noted that occurrences of this nature are not uncommon on major road corridors, especially in areas or regions with loose geological formations, which make them more vulnerable to erosion and collapse.

Motorists and road users have been advised to steer clear of the affected section, adhere strictly to traffic advisories, and exercise utmost caution when navigating the route to prevent further accidents or gridlocks.

According to the statement, the Ministry is in constant communication with the relevant federal authorities to ensure that repair and stabilization works commence without delay. The government also reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ensuring public safety and the restoration of normal traffic flow within the shortest possible time.
