The Deputy Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Enugu State, Hon. Barr. Ugo-Ferdinand Ukwueze, has responded to recent comments made by Comrade Kennedy Iyere against the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.

Speaking on Monday, Barr. Ukwueze criticized Iyere over a video in which the Coordinator-General of the Nigerian Youth Economic Engagement and De-Radicalisation Programme (NIYEEDEP) reportedly described Governor Mbah as a “mistake” made by the people of Enugu State.

Ukwueze stated that Iyere, who is reportedly under investigation over alleged financial impropriety amounting to ₦113,508,757, should focus on addressing the allegations against him rather than launching attacks on the Governor. The allegations were said to have arisen from complaints by Silver Green Hotel Ltd and other parties.

“It is unfortunate that someone facing serious allegations would choose to engage in public attacks instead of concentrating on clearing his name,” Ukwueze said.

“Leadership and activism must be grounded in credibility and responsibility.”
He further noted that Iyere had previously supported Governor Mbah’s candidacy and even urged other gubernatorial aspirants to support him after the 2023 election. Ukwueze also referenced Iyere’s withdrawal from the 2024 Edo State governorship race under the Accord Party shortly before the election, a development that generated public discussion at the time.

Responding to claims that Governor Mbah was financially unstable prior to the 2023 general election, Ukwueze described the statement as false and politically motivated. He maintained that the Governor’s asset declarations are publicly available at the Code of Conduct Bureau and emphasized that Mbah had established business and infrastructural investments before assuming office.

“When allegations are made without verifiable facts, they risk misleading the public and creating unnecessary tension,” he said. “Serious claims must be supported with credible evidence.”
Ukwueze also cautioned against the use of inflammatory language in political discourse, urging stakeholders to engage responsibly and avoid statements capable of inciting division.

Highlighting the administration’s achievements, the ALGON deputy chairman stated that Governor Mbah has embarked on major developmental projects across the state, including the construction of 260 Type-2 primary healthcare centres, 260 smart schools, 17 science schools, a 300-bed international hospital, and an international conference hotel. He also cited the establishment of Enugu Air with six aircraft, construction and rehabilitation of over 4,000 kilometers of roads, installation of security CCTV infrastructure, development of command and control centres, and the revival of Niger Gas and other state-owned enterprises.

According to him, these projects demonstrate prudent utilization of state resources and have transformed Enugu into what he described as “a massive construction site,” earning the Governor commendations and recognition from various organizations.
He concluded by urging political actors to prioritize constructive engagement and focus on issues that promote development and unity in Enugu State.
