POWA Marks 2026 International Women’s Day in Enugu, Supports Families of Fallen Police Officers

POWA members celebrating 2026 International Women’s Day in Enugu

The Enugu State Chapter of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) on Tuesday celebrated the 2026 International Women’s Day with humanitarian outreach and educational activities aimed at supporting police families, particularly wives of deceased officers.

The event, held at the Enugu State Police Command Headquarters in GRA, Enugu, featured the distribution of food items to over 100 widows of late police officers, alongside health awareness lectures and medical checkups for participants.

Declaring the programme open, the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, congratulated police officers’ wives and women across the state for their resilience and contributions to society. The police chief, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, DCP Hope Okereke Isiani, described the theme of the celebration, “Gift to Gain,” as timely and meaningful.

According to him, acts of generosity and support within the policing community strengthen unity, compassion and collective responsibility among officers’ families and the wider society.

In her address, the Command’s POWA Chairperson and wife of the Commissioner of Police, represented by the Acting Chairperson, Mrs. Sarah George Okwor, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to promoting the welfare of police officers’ families. She assured participants that POWA would continue to provide support systems aimed at strengthening family bonds and assisting vulnerable members.

She also expressed appreciation to the National President of POWA, Mrs. Oluwafunmilola Mutiat Disu, for her leadership and support in ensuring the success of the nationwide International Women’s Day celebration.

As part of the programme, medical personnel from the Command’s Medical Services conducted health checks for participants and delivered lectures on women’s health issues, including the prevention of cervical cancer and strategies for managing stress.

Similarly, Barrister Sylvia Abanah, Chairperson of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria, Enugu State Branch and former Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in the state, delivered a lecture focusing on the significance of the IWD theme, “Gift to Gain,” encouraging women to embrace compassion, community support and empowerment.

A highlight of the celebration was the distribution of relief materials to widows of fallen police officers. Beneficiaries received bags of rice, tubers of yam, cartons of noodles, onions and other essential food items.

Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the Enugu State Police Command and the leadership of POWA at both state and national levels for their continued support and compassion toward families of deceased officers.

The event attracted several senior police officers and stakeholders, including the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, ACP Leticia Onyechere Onwuchekwa; the Officer in Charge of the Gender and Anti-Human Trafficking Section of the State CID; the State POWA Liaison Officer, SP Chinelo Ezekwe; as well as executives and members of POWA, the Police Wives Association (PWA) and the Late Police Officers’ Wives Association (LAPOWA).

The celebration formed part of activities marking the 2026 International Women’s Day aimed at promoting women’s welfare, health awareness and community support within the police family in Enugu State.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Enugu State Command, SP Daniel Ndukwe.
