Known as the “Green Gateway” to Enugu’s tourism landscape, Milkin Hill has long been a scenic highlight along the Ngwo axis, offering residents and visitors a serene drive framed by towering pines, some over 50 years old. For decades, the area has served not just as a natural landmark but as a symbol of the “042” identity, Enugu’s signature blend of cool climate, aesthetic beauty, and cultural prominence.

However, recent reports reveal that indiscriminate felling of these pines is ongoing, raising alarm about both ecological degradation and economic loss. Tourism enthusiasts warn that continued deforestation could erode one of the state’s most valuable natural assets.

Administrative Support and Strategic Vision

Lending significant weight to these concerns, the Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Barr. Chris-Roberts Ozongwu, an indigene of Ngwo, emphasized the irreplaceable value of the forest.

“The Ngwo Pine Forest is not merely a collection of trees; it is the lungs of our community and a cornerstone of Enugu’s heritage, it is a multi-billion naira natural asset and a cornerstone of our state’s tourism master plan,” Barr. Ozongwu stated. “We have projected an ambitious 3 million visitors to Enugu State this year, and Milkin Hill is the ‘Green Gateway’ that must welcome them. As a son of the soil, I understand that if we lose these pines, we lose the very aesthetic and climatic appeal that draws global travelers to our capital.

He further noted, “Our budgetary focus is on sustainable ‘Green Economy’ -where the protection of our environment is a primary driver for long-term revenue. We cannot allow indiscriminate felling to jeopardize our target of 3 million visitors. Protecting this heritage is a strategic imperative to ensure Enugu remains a premier global destination.” We cannot trade a century of history for short-term timber gains.”

Citizen Advocacy for Immediate Action

Odogwu Akin, a concerned citizen and tourism advocate, has formally appealed to His Excellency, Barr. Peter Mbah, Executive Governor of Enugu State, urging immediate measures to safeguard Milkin Hill. In a strategic brief supported by stakeholders, Akin outlined a series of recommendations:

  1. Executive Moratorium: Immediate suspension of all logging activities along Milkin Hill and the surrounding Ngwo corridor, reinforced with strict monitoring.
  2. “Mbah Reforestation Initiative”: Launch of high-profile tree-planting campaigns, introducing indigenous and ornamental species to replace lost pines.
  3. Eco-Tourism Branding: Designation of the site as “Milkin Hill Heritage Park,” complete with solar lighting, waste management facilities, and security outposts.
  4. Community Stewardship: Active engagement of local communities as guardians of the forest, turning residents into stakeholders in Enugu’s tourism growth.

“This is an opportunity to demonstrate Enugu’s commitment to sustainable development,” Akin stated. “History will remember leaders who preserved the very earth upon which future prosperity stands.”

The Bigger Picture

Environmental experts note that the Milkin Hill forest not only contributes to the state’s tourism appeal but also plays a vital role in local biodiversity and climate regulation. The current crisis underscores the need for urgent government action to prevent irreversible loss.

With Enugu’s administration focused on transforming the state into a premier global tourist destination, the protection of Milkin Hill is now seen as both a moral and strategic imperative. Hence a recent order by His Excellency Dr Peter Mba through his chief of staff Victor Ude with renewed momentum to both the forest guards and and civil defence establishment to get into action.
