The United Kingdom remains a key partner to Nigeria across trade, development assistance, and defence, with London also hosting a significant Nigerian diaspora population.

According to the official itinerary reported by AFP, the presidential couple is scheduled to meet and earlier in the day, before proceeding together to Windsor. Later, King Charles III will receive President Tinubu in a formal audience, culminating in a state banquet at the historic royal residence.
Nigeria and the United Kingdom continue to maintain robust diplomatic relations, underscored by a strategic partnership agreement concluded in November 2024. The pact is designed to bolster cooperation in economic development, immigration policy, and security collaboration.
Central to the discussions are anticipated agreements on major Nigerian port renovation projects supported by Britain, alongside trade relations which have shown notable growth. Bilateral trade between both countries reached £8.1 billion ($11 billion) in the year to September 2025, representing an 11.4 per cent year-on-year increase.
The visit comes against the backdrop of renewed security concerns in Nigeria, following suspected suicide bombings that claimed at least 23 lives in the country’s northeast on Monday evening. The region has been plagued by a jihadist insurgency since 2009.
Recent remarks by , who described the violence as a “genocide” of Christians, have sparked diplomatic tensions between Washington and Abuja, with Nigerian authorities firmly rejecting the characterisation. In response to the latest attacks, President Tinubu directed security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri to take charge of operations.
Further engagements during the visit include a scheduled meeting on Thursday with British Prime Minister , as well as interactions with members of the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom.
Notably absent from the official programme is the customary meeting between visiting heads of state and the British opposition.
The last full Nigerian state visit to the United Kingdom dates back to 1989, although President Tinubu was previously received by King Charles in September 2024. Prior to ascending the throne, King Charles—then Prince of Wales—visited Nigeria on four occasions before the passing of in 2022.
