
The iconic Coal City Masquerades on Easter Monday staged a cultural visit to the residence of the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, in a colourful display of traditional performance and community gathering held at WTC Estate, Enugu.

The event featured a procession of masquerades, accompanied by drummers and cultural performers, drawing residents and guests who gathered to witness the display of Igbo heritage through dance, music, and symbolism.




The gathering also carried a political undertone, as participants and speakers expressed public support for the administration of the Enugu State Governor, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, commending his governance and infrastructural development efforts across the state.



Receiving the cultural troupe, the Awgu LGA Chairman, Uchenna Joseph Okolo, described the visit as a demonstration of cultural unity and community engagement. He praised the role of traditional institutions in strengthening social cohesion and expressed appreciation for the masquerade group’s performance.




Okolo further indicated plans to engage the state government on formalizing the Easter Monday masquerade celebration as an annual cultural festival, aimed at promoting tourism, preserving heritage, and enhancing grassroots participation.



In a show of support for cultural activities, he announced a donation of ₦1 million to the masquerade group to assist their cultural initiatives.



Speaking on behalf of the troupe, cultural custodian Ndubuisi Ejoh emphasized the significance of masquerade traditions in Igbo society, describing the Easter celebration as a unifying cultural practice that reinforces identity and continuity.



The event concluded with a series of elaborate masquerade performances that attracted large crowds, with many residents describing the occasion as both entertaining and culturally significant.



While the gathering blended traditional celebration with expressions of political solidarity, it highlighted the continued relevance of cultural institutions in public life and community identity in Enugu State.
