Governor Peter Mbah’s Disruptive Policy Drive Transforms Forgotten Rural Communities: The Story of Akpoga-Nike

By Reuben Onwuka

The notion that the world is a global village has long been debated among development scholars. While developed nations reach for the moon, many African communities struggle to access basic necessities. The story of Akpoga-Nike, a rural community in Enugu East Council Area, is a testament to this disparity.

Located just five kilometers from Emene Town, Akpoga-Nike has lacked essential infrastructure since the advent of civil rule in Enugu State. The community’s isolation is stark, with no access road, school, hospital, water, or electricity.

Residents face immense challenges, particularly during rainy seasons. Floods render the area impassable, forcing residents to park their vehicles in neighboring communities. Pregnant women are often conveyed to Emene cottage hospitals via wheelbarrow, highlighting the community’s dire needs.

However, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s administration has brought hope to Akpoga-Nike. Dubbed the “Project Master of the South Eastern Region,” Governor Mbah ordered his Infrastructure Ministry to intervene.

Today, Akpoga-Nike’s fortunes have changed. The community’s virgin road is already five kilometers complete, with the remaining portion connecting Eziobodo and Mbuluowo underway. The 21-kilometer road project is a game-changer for the community.

According to the contractor handling the project, “Before our arrival, the entire area was flooded. We used the best materials available to fix this road, installing a top-quality drainage system. When completed, this road will require minimal maintenance for five years.”

The community’s joy is palpable. Akpoga-Nike residents are ecstatic, while Ndi Eziobodo and Mbuluowo eagerly await their first tarred road, marking the end of decades-long neglect.

Governor Mbah’s commitment to rural development is transforming lives in Enugu State. As Akpoga-Nike’s transformation nears completion, the community stands poised for a brighter future, connected to the rest of the world.
