In the 2024 rankings, Covenant University and the University of Ibadan were the two Nigerian institutions that made the top 1,000. This was an improvement from the 2023 rankings, which saw three universities – University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, and Covenant University – feature in the top 1,000. However, the latest ranking shows a decline, with only Covenant University making the cut.

Covenant University’s consistent performance is noteworthy, as it has maintained its position in the top 1,000 since 2019. Following closely are Ahmadu Bello University, Landmark University, University of Ibadan, and University of Lagos, which are ranked between 1001-1200. Other Nigerian universities, including Bayero University, Federal University of Technology Akure, Federal University of Technology Minna, University of Benin, and the University of Ilorin, are ranked in the 1201-1500 bracket.

Globally, Oxford University retains its number-one spot for the tenth consecutive year. According to THE, Oxford’s performance was bolstered by significant improvements in its income from industry and the number of patents that cite its research, as well as its teaching scores. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) moved up to second place, while Harvard University secured third. Stanford University dropped to sixth place, its lowest ranking since 2010.

THE employs a comprehensive methodology to determine the rankings, considering 18 performance indicators across five key areas: teaching (29.5%), research environment (29%), research quality (30%), international outlook (7.5%), and industry (4%). These indicators assess university activity in research, teaching, and impact.

The rankings provide valuable insights into the performance of universities worldwide, highlighting areas of strength and weakness. As Nigerian universities strive to improve their global standing, they must focus on enhancing research quality, teaching, and industry collaborations to compete effectively in the global academic landscape.
