
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has congratulated its founder, General Dr. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd) GCFR, on his 90th birthday, marked on October 19, 2024. To commemorate this milestone, the Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, led a delegation to visit General Gowon at his Abuja residence.

During the visit, Brigadier General Ahmed expressed gratitude to God for sparing General Gowon’s life over the years. He was accompanied by members of the NYSC Top Management and some Corps Members, who joined him in wishing the former Head of State a happy birthday. As a symbol of appreciation, the Director General presented General Gowon with a life-size birthday card on behalf of the entire NYSC staff and Corps Members nationwide.




In response, General Gowon thanked God for sparing his life and expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their goodwill towards him. He also commended the Director General and the entire NYSC family for their thoughtful gesture. General Gowon acknowledged the dedication of successive batches of Nigerian graduate youths, whose commitment has ensured the Scheme’s success in promoting nation-building, unity, and integration.


Reflecting on the NYSC’s inception, General Gowon recalled the initial resistance from youths. Despite these challenges, the Scheme has grown into a remarkable success story, making significant contributions to national development. The visit culminated with the NYSC team, led by Brigadier General Ahmed, spontaneously singing “Happy Birthday” to the nonagenarian.



As General Gowon marks this significant birthday, his legacy as a champion of national unity remains unparalleled. His visionary leadership in establishing the NYSC has left an enduring impact on Nigeria’s development. The NYSC family and Nigerians nationwide join in celebrating this iconic statesman’s life and achievements.
