“The national grid experienced a partial disturbance at about 1:52 pm today, November 5, 2024. This followed a series of lines and generators trippings that caused instability of the grid and, consequently, the partial disturbance of the system,” the statement read.

“We sincerely apologize for every inconvenience this may cause our electricity customers,” the statement added.
This incident marks the latest in a series of grid collapses that have plagued Nigeria’s power infrastructure. On February 4, 2024, the national grid collapsed at approximately 11:51 am, plummeting from 2,407 megawatts to just 31MW before shutting down completely.
Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, recently acknowledged that grid collapses are almost inevitable due to Nigeria’s deplorable power infrastructure. He advocated for decentralizing the power sector and establishing regional grids to ensure stability.
The House of Representatives has directed its Committee on Power to investigate the frequent national grid collapses and report back.
The Electricity Act signed by President Bola Tinubu in 2023 enables decentralization of power sector, and the plan to build regional grids aims to reduce grid collapses and improve stability.
The Nigerian public has expressed frustration and concern over the frequent grid collapses, calling for urgent action to address the country’s power challenges.
The TCN has promised to provide updates on the restoration efforts, while the House of Representatives Committee on Power is expected to commence its investigation into the grid collapses.
