Odinkalu’s statement comes after Buhari’s recent revelation that he is currently struggling financially after spending eight years in office as President. Buhari claimed that he relies on the income from renting out one of his two houses in Kaduna State to sustain himself and his family.

In an interview with the BBC Hausa service on Monday, Buhari said, “After my eight years as a civil president, I have only three houses; one in Daura and two in Kaduna. I have given one out for renting where I get money for feeding.”

Buhari also stated that he left office without corruptly enriching himself, adding that he has nothing to hide. “After eight years in office, nobody can accuse me of illicit enrichment. I have nothing to hide. I have only three houses, one in Daura and two in Kaduna. I’ve rented out one of them to sustain myself and cover my feeding expenses,” he said.

However, Odinkalu, a former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has expressed skepticism about Buhari’s claims. In a statement posted on his official X handle, @ChidiOdinkalu, on Tuesday, Odinkalu wrote, “Someone should please tell Muhammadu Buhari that he is no longer running for the office of Messiah, therefore, no longer has any need to keep lying about his earthly acquisitions.”
