The victims, Mr. Solomon Jideofor Ogu and Mr. Stephen Nwabueze Ude, were shot at close range. Mr. Ogu was confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital, while Mr. Ude suffered multiple gunshot wounds and remains in critical condition at a medical facility in Enugu.

This incident marks yet another tragic event in what appears to be a growing pattern of violence in Amaeta Mgbowo and surrounding communities. The Mgbowo community has been plagued by repeated attacks, with several incidents reported in recent times. In early 2024, Mr. Uche Ejim was shot dead at the old Eke market. Other recent victims include Anselem Emeka Ude, alias “Kpananwu,” Rolland Ebere Nwalu, and Chief Francis Aziude, all reportedly attacked under similar circumstances.

The home of Mr. Stephen Ude’s uncle was previously set ablaze by gunmen believed to be part of the same group. Additionally, Mr. John Onuigbo Obinna is reportedly missing after the incident.

Residents are calling on the Enugu State Government, the Nigerian Police Force, and all relevant security agencies to take immediate action to ensure their safety. The community is demanding:

  • Deployment of security forces to patrol and monitor vulnerable areas
  • Swift investigations and bringing perpetrators to justice quickly

An elder, who requested anonymity, spoke with our reporter during a visit, criticizing the slow pace of government intervention and expressing willingness to collaborate with other community leaders to identify suspected collaborators. The people of Mgbowo are resilient, but they should not have to live under siege in their own land.

The community is demanding a proactive, not reactive, approach to security. Justice must be served, not just for the victims of this latest attack but for every family that has suffered in silence. The silence or slow response of security agencies is exacerbating the anxiety of residents regarding targeted attacks.

As of the time of publishing this news, the Spokesperson for the Enugu State Police Command has not responded to inquiries regarding the incident. The community is crying out for help, and it is imperative that the authorities take immediate action to restore peace and security in Mgbowo. The question remains: who will be next?
