In a statement signed by Prof. Sam C. Ugwu, the Honourable Commissioner of the Ministry, the group praised the Governor’s leadership and vision for a cleaner, greener Enugu State.
According to Prof. Ugwu, “Your leadership has brought significant strides in environmental sustainability and climate action. Your vision for a cleaner, greener Enugu State is inspiring.” The Ministry highlighted some of the administration’s notable achievements in environmental sustainability and climate action, including the signing of MOUs with some miners, such as African Kits & Quarris at Awhum and Afrimetals at Iwollo/Awha.
Another significant achievement is the signing into law of the 2024 Enugu State Environmental and Climate Protection Law, aimed at preventing environmental degradation and promoting sustainability in the state. The Ministry also commended the Governor’s efforts in streamlining borrow pit management, which has promoted sustainable development, ensured public safety, and optimized resource use while generating revenue.
The Ministry’s year-round efforts to maintain environmental cleanliness through the tireless work of road sweepers and mower operators were also highlighted. “Year-round, the state maintains environmental cleanliness through the tireless efforts of road sweepers and mower operators who continuously cut grasses and trim flowers along roads and public spaces, clear blocked public drainages to prevent flooding and keep streets and highways clean and free of debris,” the statement read.
In addition, the Ministry noted the construction of five modern public toilets in strategic locations, aimed at preventing open defecation, promoting public health and hygiene, and enhancing sanitation. These facilities, located at Emene, New Market, CPS, Main Market, and Garriki, are designed to improve the overall quality of life for residents and visitors.
A significant milestone achieved by the administration is the launch of the Climate Change Policy, Action Plan, and Climate Education Manual, marking a significant step towards addressing climate change and promoting environmental sustainability.
According to Prof. Ugwu, “The launch underscores the government’s commitment to protecting the environment and ensuring a sustainable future for Enugu State.”
The Ministry expressed pride in being part of the Governor’s journey and congratulated him on his achievements. “We’re proud to be part of this journey. Congratulations, Sir. May your leadership continue to inspire positive changes,” the statement concluded.
