…As Enugu East LGA Unveils “Enugu East Garri” to Promote Food Security and Economic Inclusion
In a landmark event that underscores the Enugu State Government’s commitment to economic growth and community development, the Amankpaka Ultra Modern Market in Enugu East Local Government Area was officially opened on Saturday, June 28, 2025.

Speaking at the commissioning, Engr. Ogugua Emehelu, Special Assistant on Projects to the Executive Governor, described the market as a key economic intervention in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s bold vision to grow Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion. He praised Engr. Pst. Beloved-Dan Obi Anike, Executive Chairman of Enugu East LGA, for adopting and completing the initiative, which was originally started in partnership with the Amankpaka Nike community.

“This market reflects the administration’s commitment to inclusive development by providing structured, modern, and accessible platforms for commerce and trade,” Engr. Emehelu said.

In his remarks, Engr. Pst. Beloved-Dan Obi Anike commended the community’s initiative and applauded his predecessor, Hon. Nze Livinus Anike, for launching the project. He described the market as a shared success between government and the people.

Highlighting an added innovation, the Chairman unveiled “Enugu East Garri”—a premium, locally-processed garri brand now available in the market at subsidized rates. The product, processed under hygienic conditions, aims to improve food accessibility while supporting cassava farmers and small-scale processors.

To further support economic recovery and trader welfare, Engr. Anike announced six months of free stall rent for displaced traders, urging them to secure their spaces and restart their businesses. He also encouraged Ndi Enugu to patronize the new market, which he described as a hub for quality goods and affordable staples.

The opening ceremony drew a host of dignitaries, including Engr. Ogugua Emehelu, Special Assistant on Projects to the Executive Governor, Hon. Engr. Kingsley Anike, Deputy Chairman, Enugu East LGA, Hon. Raymond Ugwu, Member representing Enugu East Rural Constituency, Hon. Osita Okoh, Member representing Enugu East Constituency, Hon. Chinedu Mbah, SSA on Market Mobilization (represented), Hon. Obumneme Eke, Leader, Enugu East Legislative Council, Barr. Uche Mbaeke, Secretary, Enugu East LGA, and Hon. Obinna Ogbu, SPA Special Duties.

The Amankpaka Ultra Modern Market is expected to serve as a catalyst for rural-urban trade, generate employment, and enhance food distribution in the region, while the “Enugu East Garri” project signals a renewed focus on value-added local production under the Mbah administration.
