The Enugu State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment, pledging continuous collaboration with groups and associations whose intentions are geared towards transforming the lives of young people in the state.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, gave the charge on Saturday at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, during the 2025 Youth Empowerment Programme organised by the Ezeagu in Diaspora International Association.

The event, themed “Empowering the Youths for a Better Tomorrow: Together Let’s Build a New and Prosperous Ezeagu,” witnessed the empowerment of more than 1,000 Ezeagu youths between the ages of 18 and 30.

Government House Correspondent Fred Nnaji reports that Prof. Onyia commended the convener of the programme, Mr. John-Mary Aniagolu, for what he described as a lofty initiative. He urged the organisers to forward the names of all beneficiaries to the state’s skills acquisition database so they could access government’s training models.

According to him, Governor Peter Mbah’s administration has invested hugely in education and youth empowerment, stressing that “investment in human beings lasts from one generation to another.” He also called on other wealthy individuals to emulate Aniagolu’s gesture.

Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Diaspora Affairs, Mrs. Olangwa Ezekwu, enumerated various skills acquisition initiatives already running in the state. She noted that Governor Mbah strongly believes that youths represent the future of tomorrow and must therefore be adequately prepared to face the challenges of a technology-driven world.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the event, Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, identified hard work as the bedrock of every success, stressing that Ezeagu people are known for their industry, agriculture, courage, and resilience.

On his part, the convener and President of the Ezeagu in Diaspora Association, Mr. John-Mary Aniagolu, vowed to lift his people out of poverty. He recalled his difficult early life experiences, saying they helped shape him into a better person today. Aniagolu also appealed for more support from the state government, noting that his group already has over 1,000 youths captured in its empowerment database.

Beneficiaries of the programme are expected to be trained in a wide range of skills, including vocational, agricultural, digital, artisan, technical, and trade-related fields.
