Ugwu’s first official engagement with the institution’s leadership since his appointment. Addressing Management members, he described his assumption of office as coming at a defining moment in the state’s education reform drive, with the Mbah administration prioritising technical and vocational education as a catalyst for skills development, employability, and economic competitiveness.
The Council Chairman expressed his readiness to reposition ESCET into a globally competitive institution, stressing that this goal would be achieved through the full support of the Enugu State Government and the collective cooperation of Management and staff.
He emphasised that the transformation of ESCET would be guided by Governor Mbah’s “Business Unusual” development philosophy, noting that delivering a world-class technical education system requires discipline, teamwork, and shared ownership of the reform agenda.
“All hands must be on deck to achieve the desired turnaround,” he said, urging the College to deliberately raise the quality of its academic and technical outputs. He also encouraged the training and exposure of students to international competitions and high-level academic and skills-based engagements, which, he noted, would elevate ESCET’s standing among its peers.
According to Hon. Barr. Ugwu, such strategic repositioning would not only enhance the image of the College but also align it more closely with the Governor’s vision of producing industry-ready graduates capable of competing globally, while attracting recognition and rewards for excellence.
He further cautioned against gossip, backbiting, disunity, and unhealthy rivalries within the institution, calling instead for peace, unity, harmony, focus, and progressive ideals in the overall interest of ESCET and the successful implementation of the state’s technical education reform programme.
In her response, the Provost of the College, Dr. Stella Ekwueme, congratulated the Council Chairman on his appointment and assured him of the total support and cooperation of the College Management and staff in realising a renewed vision for ESCET that aligns with the education transformation agenda of the Enugu State Government.
Dr. Ekwueme highlighted key achievements recorded since her appointment in 2023, including the successful accreditation of all academic programmes, facilitation of the payment of outstanding salary arrears by the State Government, increased government subvention, and the streamlining of the College’s academic calendar.
She, however, noted that the institution still faces some challenges, expressing confidence that with the support of the new Council Chairman and the Enugu State Government, such issues would be addressed to further strengthen ESCET’s capacity for growth, relevance, and excellence.
The meeting, attended by all Principal Officers of the College, signalled the beginning of a renewed phase of collaboration between the Governing Council and Management, aimed at repositioning ESCET as a hub for world-class technical education and a key pillar of Enugu State’s human capital development strategy.
