A CAREER BUILT ON COMPETENCE
Hon. Mike Ogbuekwe did not begin his journey in politics. He began it as a professional.
Trained as a Mechanical Engineer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, he commenced his professional career in 2007 with the then Intercontinental Bank Plc as a Business Development Manager before joining Baker Hughes Incorporated, a global energy technology company.
His career in the private sector exposed him to some of the world’s most advanced professional environments. Through professional engagements and development programmes, he gained international exposure in cities including Aberdeen, Scotland; Houston, Texas; Paris, France; and Seoul, South Korea, among others.
That exposure provided him with a global perspective on leadership, management, technology, professional standards and institutional development.
For Mike Ogbuekwe, however, international exposure was never intended to be a trophy. It became a tool for service.
A MAN WHO SERVED ACROSS TWO STATES
In 2014, Ogbuekwe transitioned into public service and joined the Government of Anambra State under Governor Willie Obiano.
What followed was a remarkable progression of responsibilities.
Among the strategic positions he held were:
- Senior Special Adviser on Agriculture;
- Member, Anambra State Economic Think Tank;
- Secretary, Anambra State Land Acquisition and Mediation Team;
- Secretary, Anambra State Agriculture Transformation Implementation Team.
His competence and capacity soon earned him even greater responsibility.
In 2018, he was appointed Director-General of the Project Management and Monitoring Office (PMMO), where he was entrusted with monitoring government projects, programmes and contracts across Anambra State.
In that capacity, he reportedly helped the state government save more than ₦2 billion through effective project monitoring and oversight.
He also served as Secretary of the Standards and Modernization Committee and Secretary of the Roads Design Review Committee.
These responsibilities tell a story of trust.
They demonstrate that, at different times, government entrusted him with sensitive responsibilities requiring competence, diligence, coordination and accountability.
ENUGU: ANOTHER CHAPTER OF SERVICE
When Hon. Mike Ogbuekwe returned to public service in Enugu State in 2019 under Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, his value once again transcended geography and political administration.
He served as Special Adviser and subsequently took on several strategic responsibilities, including becoming the Focal Person on the Enugu State Non-Oil Export Programme.
He also served on important state committees, including:
- The World Bank-driven Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery Economic Stimulus Committee of Enugu State;
- The Enugu State COVID-19 Emergency and Palliative Committee;
- The Enugu State Public Sector Reform Committee.
Once again, the pattern was unmistakable:
Experience. Responsibility. Competence. Results.
THE PETER MBAH ADMINISTRATION: PERFORMANCE CONTINUES
The emergence of the administration of Governor Peter Mbah did not bring an end to Ogbuekwe’s public service career.
Instead, it opened another important chapter.
He was appointed Special Adviser on Agriculture and subsequently served as Chief Executive Officer of Enugu State Marketing Company Limited.
These responsibilities placed him at the intersection of agriculture, enterprise, investment, market development and economic growth.
This experience is particularly relevant to the future of Nkanu East.
The development of Nkanu East cannot be built on rhetoric alone. It requires leadership that understands agriculture, infrastructure, enterprise, investment, project management, government processes, human capital development and economic empowerment.
