The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State has brought its campaign for Saturday’s council election to a close, with Agbuogugu providing the final stage for a gathering of party leaders, community stakeholders, women, youths and supporters.

The grand finale, held on Wednesday, September 23, marked the end of a series of ward and community engagements led by the APC chairmanship candidate and incumbent Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo.

The campaign, which traversed several communities in the council area, was anchored on continuity, grassroots engagement and support for the APC candidates ahead of the September 26 local government elections.

At Agbuogugu, the campaign ended with speeches, political declarations and appeals for sustained engagement between government and the people.

The programme opened with a prayer by Mrs. Esther Arinze Chukwuohu, after which community and political leaders took turns to address the gathering.

Among those who spoke were the President-General of the Federation of Agbuogugu Autonomous Community, Amb. Elozie Ndubuisi; Ward Chairman, Hon. Utonu Monday; Dr. Chidozie Nelson Nwafor; Hon. Ndubuisi Chijioke; Hon. Nnamdi Udeani; Hon. F.N. Nwaudeigwe; Chief Mathias Egbo; Dr. Desmond Owo; Barr. Nnamdi Chukwudi; Sir Hon. Ralph Onovo; Director-General of the Awgu Campaign Committee, Hon. Okey Nathan Udeh; APC Chairman in Awgu LGA, Hon. Kenechukwu Okolo; Hon. Charles Ezenta; and Hon. Mrs. Jane Chiwendu Eneh.

The speakers expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, Chairman Okolo and other APC candidates, while stressing the importance of maintaining contact with communities after the campaign drums have fallen silent.

The gathering also featured calls for support for Okolo’s bid for another term and for the APC candidates contesting the council and legislative elections.

Agbuogugu was the final major stop in a campaign tour that had taken the APC team through several communities and wards in Awgu. Earlier engagements included Ugwulesi, Adoagbolato, Ogboli, Ohaja, Ugbokpala, Ngene Ugbo and Ugbonabo, where the campaign team met residents and community stakeholders and presented its message of continuity and development.

Addressing the Agbuogugu gathering, Okolo thanked the community for the reception accorded him and members of the campaign team.

He used the occasion to highlight projects and programmes of the Peter Mbah administration which, he said, had implications for communities in Awgu and the wider Enugu State.

Among those cited were the Smart Schools programme, Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres, road projects, the proposed farm estate and Games Village.

Okolo also pointed to the reported approval of the Ugwueme Road and Nenwenta Road projects, presenting them as part of the infrastructure agenda of the state government.

The state government has reported more than 1,521 kilometres of constructed and reconstructed roads, over 7,000 classrooms and 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres among the milestones recorded under the Mbah administration.

For Okolo, the message was straightforward: development, once started, requires continuity.

He urged residents to remain engaged with government programmes and initiatives, linking the success of ongoing projects to sustained cooperation between communities and government.

The campaign delegation included Okolo; his deputy, Dr. Stanley Ezediuto; Director-General of the campaign, Hon. Okey Udeh; APC Chairman in Awgu, Hon. Kenechukwu Okolo; Secretary to the Local Government, Rt. Hon. Nelson Nduji; APC candidates for Awgu South and Awgu North State Constituencies, Hon. Anthony Nwankwo and Hon. Charles Ezenta respectively; Hon. Raphy Onovo; Chief Francis Obasi; Barr. Eze O. Eze; Hon. Ginika Tor William; Prof. Benedette Ekwutosi Okoli; Dr. Ajah Ego; Sir Isaac Egu Ileabuchi Aniagu; Prof. Martins Ngozi Anikwe; Hon. Nnanna Nze; Boniface Agu; Nelson Ileabuchi; Sunday Nnamani; Hon. Solomon Egbo Kadgethan Okoye; Hon. Emeka Mbah; Hon. Ijeoma Mbah; members of Peter Mbah’s Vanguards and other party leaders and supporters.

With the Agbuogugu rally, the APC’s campaign train in Awgu has completed its major grassroots engagements, leaving the candidates and their supporters to await Saturday’s vote.

The campaign period has also been accompanied by a formal peace agreement, with seven political parties participating in the Enugu council elections signing a peace accord committing their candidates and supporters to peaceful, non-violent and inclusive participation before, during and after the election.

The campaign banners will now give way to ballot papers.

For Awgu, Saturday will provide the next chapter in a political contest that has taken the candidates and their supporters through communities across the local government, with development, representation and continuity featuring prominently in the campaign conversation.
