Police Arrest Building Owner After Five Family Members Die in Awgu Reservoir Collapse

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested the owner of a building in connection with the collapse of a concrete water reservoir that killed five members of the same family at Umuike-Aja Village, Nenwenta Community, Awgu Local Government Area.

The tragedy occurred in the early hours of September 18, 2026, when the reservoir, constructed on an uncompleted building, collapsed onto the adjoining residence of a neighbour identified as Raphael Onwu.

Onwu, his wife, mother and two children were trapped and killed in the collapse.

According to the Police Command, the incident was reported at about 5:45 a.m., prompting operatives of the Awgu Police Division to mobilise to the scene. They were joined by personnel of the National Emergency Management Agency and members of the community in the rescue operation.

A nine-year-old boy was eventually rescued from the wreckage and rushed to hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

The five other members of the family were recovered from the debris and taken to hospital, where they were confirmed dead. Their remains were subsequently deposited in a mortuary pending preservation and autopsy.

The owner of the building on which the reservoir was constructed, identified by the police as Nkwo Onyedikachi Geoffrey, has been arrested as investigators probe the circumstances that led to the collapse.

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, saying appropriate action would be taken based on the outcome of the inquiry.

Giwa also commiserated with the bereaved family and the wider community over the loss, while warning against unsafe construction practices.

He urged property owners and developers to comply with approved building and safety standards and engage qualified professionals in the construction of structures, particularly those capable of posing danger to neighbouring homes and residents.

For one family in Awgu, however, the investigation comes after the most painful accounting of all: five lives lost in a matter of moments, while a nine-year-old survivor remains in hospital.
