Nnamchi raised the alarm on Tuesday during proceedings at the House of Representatives, where he moved a Motion of Urgent Public Importance, seeking immediate humanitarian assistance for families whose homes and properties have been ravaged by the disaster.
The lawmaker’s intervention brought the plight of the affected community to the attention of federal lawmakers, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated action to address the consequences of the flooding and provide relief to displaced residents.
According to Nnamchi, the disaster has left hundreds of residents displaced, destroyed household properties and subjected affected families to severe hardship. He expressed concern over the scale of the devastation, stressing that the victims require immediate assistance to meet their most basic needs.
At the centre of his appeal is a demand for the swift deployment of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assess the damage, determine the scale of humanitarian needs and provide relief to the affected population.
Nnamchi urged the House to direct the agency to mobilise emergency support, including temporary shelter, food supplies, medical assistance and other essential relief materials for families struggling to cope with the aftermath of the disaster.
However, the lawmaker’s appeal extends beyond the immediate provision of relief materials. He called on the Federal Ministry of Environment and the Enugu State Government to pursue lasting interventions capable of addressing the underlying causes of the flooding and reducing the risk of future disasters in the community.
His position underscores the need to combine emergency humanitarian assistance with sustainable environmental measures, particularly in communities exposed to recurring flooding and its devastating social and economic consequences.
For families forced from their homes, the consequences of the disaster go beyond damaged property. Access to shelter, healthcare, food and other necessities becomes an immediate concern, making a timely and coordinated government response critical to their recovery.
Describing the situation in Umualor as heartbreaking, Nnamchi called for urgent action on the proposed resolutions of the House, emphasising the need to protect lives, ease the suffering of displaced residents and restore dignity to families affected by the disaster.
The lawmaker’s motion places the urgent needs of Umualor’s flood victims before the nation’s federal legislature, reinforcing calls for immediate relief and a sustainable response to the community’s flooding challenges.
