ENSUBEB BOSS ASSOC PROF OKIBE SPEAKS ON THE INVALUABLE ROLE OF TEACHERS IN THE CHARACTER FORMATION OF CHILDREN IN SCHOOLS

The Executive Chairman of Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB), Assoc. Prof. Hyginus Banko Okibe has reminded teachers of their invaluable role in the moral upbringing and character formation of children placed under their care.

Prof. Okibe stated this at the opening ceremony of a four-day training programme on moral regeneration and re-orientation in Basic Education organized by the Board in collaboration with Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for teachers in Enugu State.

The ENSUBEB Chairman, who was represented by Permanent Member III of the Board, Hon. Nwakaego Aja said that teachers are the architect of what their learners accept as right or wrong, especially during their formative years and, therefore, are expected to show them good examples and teach them well.

He likens the teachers to the ministers in the church who are charged with the responsibility of guiding their flocks, teaching them good morals, and how to become good and responsible citizens.

The Executive Chairman told the participants that the programme was organized to build their capacity, and equip them with all the necessary skills and values they will cascade down to their colleagues to promote moral education, foster ethical values in our children and make them better citizens.

Assoc. Prof. Okibe therefore, charged them to devote more time and take the training programme seriously, paying attention to their resource persons to be able to gather every information that would help them in delivering the right information to build the capacity of other teachers in their respective Local Government Areas.

He stated that the result of the training programme will be determined by its impact on our children and appealed to them to always work towards building the character of the learners, promoting culture of honesty, hard work, good moral, patriotism and guiding them to the right path.

He maintained that the education of a child rests on three legs, the child, the teachers, and the parent, and said that it is only by working together through exemplary character that we can build a better/brighter future for our children and instill in them the value of compassion, empathy, honesty, and culture of hard work. This is a sure way to build a generation who are capable of making positive contributions to society.

In a vote of thanks, one participant, Mrs. Ugwu Onyinyechi Sandra, appreciated ENSUBEB and UBEC, who are the organizers of the training programme and thanked them for the opportunity given to them to participate in the training.

Mrs. Ugwu, on behalf of her colleagues, promised to take the training seriously and to cascade all they have learned to their colleagues for better results and in the best interest of their pupils.

About 25 teachers from all the 17 Local Government Areas of the state are attending the training.
