
The Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) unanimously adopted Comrade Alhassan Yahya and Dr Mrs Abimbola Oyetunde as sole Presidential and Deputy Presidential Candidates for the 2024 National Triennial Delegates Conference in Imo state, tagged Owerri 2024.

The adoption occurred during the campaign flag-off and inauguration of the A+A Campaign Council at the Lagos NUJ Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos State, Leaders, members, and veterans of the Council, led by Chairman Comrade Adeleye Ajayi and Secretary Tunde Olalere, received the campaign team.
Comrade Abiodun Akinbusuyi, former Secretary of the Council, moved the motion for adoption after reviewing the candidates’ manifesto, He praised Comrade Yahya’s understanding of NUJ members’ needs and modern media trends, demonstrated through his answers to council members’ questions.
Comrade Odunayo David, Correspondents Chapel member, seconded the motion, urging colleagues to support the duo and their team for massive progress and transformation.
The Director-General of the A+A Campaign Council and Oyo State Council Chairman, Comrade Demola Babalola (JP), introduced the team: Yahya, Oyetunde, Victor Ndukwe (Treasurer), Samuel Dada (Financial Secretary), Ronke Samo (VP B Zone), and Tukur Mohammed, Babalola chose Lagos Council for the flag-off due to its prominence.
Comrade Alhassan Yahya presented his manifesto, highlighting
Insurance scheme (health insurance and weigh-in allowance),
Restructuring the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ),
Establishing NUJ online radio,
Developing NUJ Secretariat infrastructure,
Capacity building for journalists,
Sustaining press freedom,
Attracting FG intervention funds,
Reintroducing the media enhancement bill.
Yahya emphasized gender equality, choosing Dr Abimbola as running mate to ensure women’s equal opportunities, His deputy would be an equal contributor, not a spare tire.
Dr Abimbola urged the Lagos Council to make the right choice, promising not to disappoint.
Leaders from NUJ South West and other parts of the country attended.
With the flag-off, the A+A Campaign Council will campaign across the country ahead of the NUJ Triennial Delegates Conference on November 27, 2024, in Owerri, Imo state.
