A dramatic turn of events unfolded as Assad’s Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft, with registration YK-ATA, departed Damascus International Airport at 10:45 AM local time. Initially headed towards Iraq, the plane changed direction towards a Russian military base in Latakia before turning back and vanishing from radar near a rebel-held area west of Homs.

Assad’s departure marks the end of nearly 54 years of Assad family rule in Syria. His father, Hafez al-Assad, ruled the country for almost three decades, establishing a Soviet-style centralized economy and maintaining power through a stifling grip on dissent. Assad had sought assistance from the United States, promising to sever ties with Iran and Hezbollah in exchange for help in remaining in power.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with Israel reinforcing its military presence on the Syrian border and warning rebels not to attack. The United Nations, European Union, and Arab League have also issued statements calling for calm and stability in the region.

Concerns are growing about the fate of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile, the safety of religious minorities, particularly Christians, and the potential for a humanitarian crisis. The situation on the ground remains fluid, with reports of widespread celebrations in rebel-held areas and fears of potential reprisals by loyalist forces.

Theories and speculation are rife, with some suggesting that reports of Assad’s plane crash may be faked, while others believe he may have been accepted by another state or sought asylum.

Sources close to the Assad regime have confirmed that the Syrian president fled the country, but the exact circumstances of his departure remain unclear. The situation in Syria continues to unfold, with the international community holding its breath as the country teeters on the brink of uncertainty.
