UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA NSUKKA CANCELS CONVOCATION ELECTION OVER PROTESTS AND PENDING COURT CASE

The University of Nigeria Nsukka has canceled the just-concluded Convocation Election due to protests and a pending court case. The university’s administration issued a midnight memo on December 18, 2024, stating that the election’s conduct has not been concluded and that some individuals have challenged the election in court.

The memo, signed by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu, advised all parties and stakeholders to remain calm and maintain peace until all issues concerning the Convocation Election are resolved.

The cancellation comes after protests were staged at both Nsukka and Enugu campuses on December 17 and 18, 2024, respectively. The protesters were concerned about the conduct of the Convocation Election, which aimed to elect a representative of Convocation in the University Governing Council.

This development is the latest in a series of events surrounding the Convocation Election. Aspirants had earlier raised concerns about the electoral process, citing allegations of administrative extortion and manipulation.

The university’s decision to cancel the election is seen as a move to address the concerns and ensure a free and fair electoral process. The university community and stakeholders are advised to await further updates on the matter.

PUBLIC NOTICE ON THE 2024 CONVOCATION ELECTION

UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA
OFFICE OF THE VICE-CHANCELLOR
December 18, 2024

It has come to the attention of the University Administration that some group of persons staged protests at both Nsukka and Enugu Campuses on 17th and 18th December, 2024, respectively concerning the conduct of Convocation Election for the purpose of electing a representative of Convocation in the University Governing Council.

We are further informed that the same group of persons intend to continue the protest on 19th December, 2024.

This is to bring to the attention of the University Community, and the general public, that the conduct of Convocation Election has not been concluded. Also, some persons have gone to Court to challenge the conduct of the election, and the matter is still pending at the Federal High Court, Enugu.

In view of the foregoing, the University Management wishes to advise all parties and stakeholders to remain calm and maintain peace until all the issues concerning the Convocation Election are resolved.
