RIVERS EX-GOVERNOR PASSES ON

Retired Major-General Godwin Osagie Abbe, a former Minister of Defence and Interior, has died after a prolonged illness. He was 75.

Abbe, who served as military Governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers states, passed away in Abuja on Saturday, according to sources close to the family.

Born on January 10, 1949, Abbe had a distinguished career in the Nigerian Army, serving in various capacities, including General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division Nigerian Army, Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), and Commander of the National War College.

He retired from service in 1999 and went on to serve as Minister of Defence during the administration of late President Umaru Yar’Adua. Abbe also served as Minister of Interior between July 26, 2007, and July 14, 2009.

Governor Monday Okpebhbolo of Edo State has mourned the late general, describing him as a “legendary son of the state.” In a statement, Okpebhbolo praised Abbe’s exceptional leadership qualities, commitment to the well-being of the Nigerian people, and distinguished service to the nation.

“General Abbe’s life was a testament to discipline, dedication, and service to the nation,” Okpebhbolo said. “His legacy will continue to inspire and guide us. We celebrate his life, his service, and his contributions to our great nation.”

Abbe’s death has been met with tributes from across the country, with many Nigerians taking to social media to pay their respects to the late general.
