In a surprise move, Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu has been relieved of his duties as Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), ahead of the scheduled end of his tenure on February 14.

Professor Oguejiofo T. Ujam has been appointed as Chigbu’s successor, taking on the role of Acting Vice Chancellor for a six-month term. Notably, Ujam will not be eligible to apply for the permanent Vice Chancellor position.

Until his appointment, Professor Ujam served as the Dean of the School of General Studies at UNN. He is a renowned scholar and prolific writer, widely respected for his academic excellence and contributions to his field.

The leadership changes at UNN extend beyond the Vice Chancellor’s office, with General Ike Nwachukwu being reassigned as Pro-Chancellor to the University of Uyo. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo as the new Pro-Chancellor of UNN.

The university’s governing council has not publicly commented on the reasons behind Chigbu’s removal or the appointments of Ujam and Ojo. However, sources close to the matter indicate that the changes are part of a broader effort to reposition the university for greater excellence.
