The telecommunications giant announced the reversal in a statement on its official X account on Thursday, apologizing to Nigerians for the sudden and significant price increase.

The company’s decision to reverse the tariff hike comes after a tumultuous 48 hours, during which subscribers took to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the price increase. Many threatened to port to other networks, while others called for regulatory intervention.

In a statement, MTN Nigeria acknowledged the public outcry, saying: “We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200 percent increase on your favorite digital bundle… We get it and admit it. Let’s just say it was a mistake.”

The company’s reversal is seen as a victory for consumers, who have been increasingly vocal about their opposition to price increases in the telecommunications sector.

The development highlights the importance of consumer feedback and the need for telecommunications companies to be responsive to the needs and concerns of their subscribers.

MTN Nigeria’s decision to backtrack on the tariff hike is also likely to be seen as a test case for the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which has faced criticism in the past for its handling of consumer complaints.
