In a bid to transform Awgu Local Government Area into a model of cleanliness, health, and prosperity, the Executive Chairman, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, today held a stakeholders’ meeting where he launched the Awgu Waste Management Authority (AWGU-WAMA).

The AWGU-WAMA initiative is aimed at promoting proper sanitation and environmental sustainability in Awgu. During the meeting, Hon. Okolo emphasized the need for residents to maintain proper hygiene and ensure their surroundings remain clean. He called on all residents to key into the policies supporting a cleaner and healthier local government.

The event had in attendance notable figures, including Mrs. Chika Mbah, Managing Director of Enugu State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (ENRUWASSA), who spoke on the government’s sanitation policies and their alignment with the vision of His Excellency, Governor Peter Mbah, in making Enugu a model state for cleanliness and public health.

Hon. Okolo also provided updates on the ongoing water project, announcing that Phase 1 of the 25-borehole project has been completed, with Phase 2 already underway. He revealed that 13 boreholes are currently under construction.

As part of efforts to eliminate open defecation, Hon. Okolo pledged to distribute 1,000 Satopans across Awgu Local Government Area to promote safe sanitation practices.

In addition, Hon. Okolo urged residents to actively participate in the Enugu Produce City (Enugu Farm Estate) initiative, stressing that this project presents vast opportunities for economic and agricultural advancement in the region. He encouraged local communities to fully engage in this development, ensuring that Awgu remains at the forefront of agricultural progress in the state.

The meeting was attended by Councillors, traditional rulers of Awgu, the Presidents-General of all the communities in Awgu, major stakeholders, Awgu WASH, ENRUWASSA Team, and other representatives.

With these initiatives, Hon. Okolo continues to drive environmental sustainability, sanitation awareness, and economic development in Awgu, working in line with the transformative vision of Governor Peter Mbah.
