The Enugu State Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) has congratulated Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah on his 53rd birthday, praising his leadership and commitment to inclusivity. However, the association also expressed deep concerns about the recent plan to restrict tricycles and minibuses from operating in the metropolis, effective March 30th.

According to Comrade Onyebuchi Mba, Chairman of JONAPWD Enugu State Chapter, the policy, although intended to improve transportation, disregards the unique challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. The association is worried about the adverse effects of this policy on its members, who already face significant mobility and economic challenges.

Key Concerns and Requests

  • The new policy does not provide alternative transportation arrangements for the vulnerable, ignoring the complex mobility needs of persons with disabilities.
  • JONAPWD urges the Enugu State Government to reconsider this policy and integrate the needs of persons with disabilities into its transportation plan.
  • Specific Requests:
    • Accessible Transportation: Ensure BRT buses are accessible and provide alternative transportation services.
    • Affordable Options: Provide discounted fares and affordable transportation options.
    • Inclusive Decision-Making: Consult and engage with organizations representing persons with disabilities on matters affecting the special community.

The association calls on the Enugu State Government to demonstrate empathy and compassion towards persons with disabilities and prioritize their needs in governance, in line with global best practices.
