
In a landmark event celebrating the University of Calabar’s golden anniversary, Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, wife of the Senate President, pledged to collaborate with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, to provide infrastructural assistance to the institution. This commitment was made during the conferment of honorary doctoral degrees on several distinguished individuals.

Other awardees included Major General Moses Bisong Obi (rtd), who received a Doctor of Peace and Conflict Studies, and Supreme Court Justice, Emmanuel Akomaye Obi, who was awarded a Doctor of Law.
The ceremony, held at the university’s main campus in Calabar, Cross River State, was attended by prominent figures, including the 15th Emir of Kano and Chancellor of the University, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.
In her remarks, Mrs. Akpabio expressed gratitude to the university’s Governing Council and management for the honor. She acknowledged her husband’s alma mater, stating, “I am happy to be honored with this award from the prestigious University of Calabar that I have heard so much about from my dear husband, an alumnus of this great institution.”
Mrs. Akpabio also praised the university, saying, “I was wondering when I will join him as a great Malabress, and that day has come, and I am grateful to the University for this honor.”
The wife of the Senate President emphasized her commitment to working with Wike and other awardees to provide infrastructural assistance to the university. This pledge was reinforced by a citation from the university, which recognized Mrs. Akpabio’s philanthropic and humanitarian efforts through her non-governmental organization, the Family Life Enhancement Initiative.
The citation also acknowledged Mrs. Akpabio’s role as a champion of women’s rights and her advocacy for increased women’s participation in governance during her tenure as First Lady of Akwa Ibom State.
Wike, who was also honored at the event, expressed his gratitude and praised President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to promote tertiary education in the country.
