Enugu State Ministry of Education Warns Schools Against Extortion of Parents and Students Over Unapproved WAEC, NECO Fees

The Enugu State Ministry of Education has issued a stern warning to private, mission, and public schools in the state against the fraudulent extortion of parents and students through unapproved WAEC and NECO fees.

In a public service notice signed by Prof. Ndubueze L. Mbah, PhD, the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Enugu State, the ministry expressed concern over disturbing reports that some private and mission schools are charging outrageous WAEC and NECO fees to students and parents.

According to the notice, the approved WAEC fee for 2025 is N28,000, comprising N27,000 payable to WAEC and N1,000 processing fee. Similarly, the approved NECO fee for 2025 is N30,000, which includes N27,000, N500, and N2,500, payable directly to NECO.

The ministry revealed that it has concluded the 2025 WAEC registration for approximately 40,000 candidates and has commenced registration for NECO. Schools and candidates are advised to pay the approved fees directly to NECO.

The Enugu State Ministry of Education has urged parents to report any incidents of extortion to the ministry, warning that confirmed cases will attract severe penalties, including legal prosecution, dismissal from service, and revocation of provisional approval and/or license for the violating school.

The notice concluded with a stern warning to proprietors and principals of schools in Enugu State, stating that any extortionary fees collected should be refunded immediately.
