The Federal Government has finally commenced payment of the new monthly allowance of N77,000 to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. This development comes after a six-month delay, during which serving corps members continued to receive the previous allowance of N33,000, introduced in 2020 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!According to Adepoju, a serving corps member in Kwara State, the new allowance has been described as “long overdue.” He noted that the payment is being disbursed in batches, with some corps members already receiving theirs while others await theirs.
The news has sparked reactions on social media, with many celebrating the increase. Twitter user @ToluDaniel10 expressed gratitude, while @fimlex2 wondered why the reaction was muted compared to when the scheme failed. @dreyymo simply celebrated with excitement emojis: “NYSC don pay 77k ooooI feel good”
The new allowance represents a 133% increase from the previous monthly stipend and is part of the new minimum wage adjustments advocated by labour unions and the government. The Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Akinyemi Nafiu, had assured that payment would commence promptly and that all eligible corps members would be credited without delay.
