Isiguzoro’s statement comes after some senators from the Southeast region staged a walkout over the Senate’s decision to throw out a motion seeking to immortalize Nwosu. The senators, led by Enyinnaya Abaribe, argued that the June 12, 1993, election conducted by NEC under Nwosu’s leadership remains Nigeria’s freest, fairest, and most credible poll. They also accused the Senate of bias in its decision, pointing out that even the president acknowledges Nwosu’s role in the election.
Isiguzoro described the Senate’s action as an affront to injustice against Nwosu and the Nigerian people. He stated that the decision to dismiss Nwosu’s legacy and contributions signifies more than an oversight, unveiling a troubling hierarchy of hypocrisy calculated to undermine the nation’s fabric. Isiguzoro emphasized that the continued refusal to acknowledge Nwosu’s sacrifices and those of others like him is an affront to democracy and unity, echoing sentiments of a civil war still unresolved.
Isiguzoro commended the Southeast senators led by Abaribe for remaining resolute in their demand for justice on behalf of the late Nwosu. He concluded that the immortalization of Nwosu is not merely a tribute to one individual’s legacy but a necessary correction toward healing the historical divides that continue to plague the nation. Isiguzoro emphasized that it is a powerful statement of unity and resilience against forces that have sought to silence the Igbo voice, inviting all Nigerians to join in demanding acknowledgment of their history and the valiant efforts of those who paved the way for democracy.
