Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has reacted strongly to the defection of Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, to the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a statement, George described the development as “shell-shocking” and criticized Oborevwori for abandoning the PDP, a party he described as well-structured, for the APC, which he claimed was disorganized.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!According to George, Oborevwori’s defection is a betrayal of the PDP, which sponsored his candidacy and enabled him to become governor. “The PDP was the party that sponsored Oborevwori’s candidacy. He should therefore vacate the seat,” George insisted.
George also alleged that the presidency and the APC are exploiting state power to pressure PDP governors into switching allegiance, often under threats. He questioned the APC’s achievements since 2015, asking what exactly the party had done to warrant PDP governors considering joining them.
The PDP chieftain’s reaction follows reports of an alleged covert agreement between President Bola Tinubu and some PDP governors, many of whom have reportedly pledged support for his second-term bid.
In addition to criticizing Oborevwori, George also took a swipe at FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over their continued ties with figures in rival political camps while still claiming to belong to the PDP. “If you’re done with the PDP, then leave and join another party. This ongoing public embarrassment must stop,” George advised.
George’s statement underscores the growing tensions within the PDP and the challenges the party faces in retaining its leaders and members amidst defections to the ruling APC.
