
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, Enugu State, will reopen for flight operations on Monday, April 28, 2025, following the completion of emergency runway repairs. The airport was closed on April 18, 2025, due to a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway, which necessitated emergency repairs.

FAAN also apologized for the inconvenience caused by the shutdown but assured the public that all actions were taken in the interest of safety.
According to FAAN, the rehabilitation works on the runway have been completed, and the runway is now cleared for landings and takeoffs by the engineers working with the authority. The airport’s reopening comes earlier than initially scheduled, as the authority had previously announced that the repair works would be concluded on May 6, 2025.
Mrs. Orah stated, “FAAN appreciates all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this time. The Authority sincerely apologises for the inconvenience but assures the public that all actions were taken in the interest of safety.” With the airport set to reopen, flight operations are expected to resume, and airlines will likely adjust their schedules accordingly.
