After a thorough investigation by a team of engineers from the Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, it was found that the cracks observed developed at the back of the abutment of the Flyover bridge. This is as a result of settlement due to the consolidation of the fill material used at the ramp section to raise the road level to the elevation of the bridge, thereby separating the grades at that interchange.

To enlighten further, soil consolidation is a process where water used during soil compaction is gradually released from the compacted soil mass over time, thereby leaving out very minute voids. The dewatered soil mass eventually moves (soil settlement as we know it) and further closes these minute voids. Recall that the fill behind the retaining walls of the ramp at that section is over 9 metres.

The general public is hereby informed not to be alarmed by these cracks as they were anticipated. Further investigation was carried out on the structural elements of the Flyover, and they were found to be intact.
