A Journey of Vision and Action

When Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo took the oath of office on September 30, 2024, and formally assumed duty as Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area on October 2, 2024, he came with a clear vision—anchored on inclusive governance, rural transformation, grassroots empowerment, and enhanced security.

Today, barely one year later, the Awgu story is no longer one of promises but of renewed hope and visible transformation. Through deliberate planning, prudent resource management, and a people-first approach, Hon. Okolo has demonstrated that true leadership is not about words but about impact.

Infrastructure: Opening Awgu to the World

In just twelve months, Awgu has witnessed unprecedented infrastructural growth. The completion and equipping of the Council’s Administrative/ICT Building restored dignity to the Secretariat, while the beautification of the headquarters gave it a fresh, modern look.

On the roads, Hon. Okolo has aggressively pursued connectivity. Notable projects include the 3.5km Awgu–Ugwueme Road, the 4km Agbogugu Smart School Road, and the asphalting of the Awgu–Ndeaboh Road (Awgu end). Access roads to the new Smart Schools are under construction, while the Farm Estate security road and fencing project is ongoing.

From the restoration of abandoned council construction equipment to the grading of rural roads across communities, Awgu’s road network is witnessing visible revival. Even the NYSC Orientation Camp Road now enjoys constant grading, easing mobility for corps members and visitors alike.

Water, Sanitation and Health: A Cleaner, Healthier Awgu

Through the Water-for-All Initiative, more than 13 solar-powered boreholes have been completed, ensuring access to clean drinking water in communities. In addition, over 2,000 satopan toilets have been distributed to indigent families in a determined effort to end open defecation.

Sanitation drives are also ongoing, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to public health and environmental cleanliness.

Power, Lighting and ICT: Illuminating Communities

With the installation of solar street lights across all communities, Awgu now glows at night, enhancing both visibility and security. The installation of CCTV cameras at the Council Secretariat further strengthens surveillance.

The elevation of the Chairman’s office building with ICT systems and the overall beautification of the Secretariat symbolize a forward-looking administration embracing modern governance tools.

Agriculture and Food Security: Planting Seeds of Prosperity

Determined to make Awgu a hub of agricultural innovation, Hon. Okolo established the Awgu Smart Farms, which are already boosting food production and agribusiness. Farmers across the LGA have received seedlings and inputs, while the newly launched Awgu Agro Rangers safeguard farmlands and guarantee security for farmers.

Education and Youth Empowerment: Securing the Future

In a landmark intervention, 1,500 students were sponsored for JAMB examinations, giving indigent families a chance to dream again. Youths have benefited from entrepreneurship and vocational trainings, equipping them with skills to thrive in today’s economy.

Sports development also got attention, with the Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah Unity Sports Tournament hosted for Awgu youths. The NYSC Orientation Camp has received steady government support—including fencing, clearing, and logistics assistance—to enhance the experience of corps members serving in Awgu.

Social Welfare and Community Empowerment: Leaving No One Behind

From Christmas and festive packages to fueling support for Okada riders, the administration has continually reached out to Ndi Awgu. Persons living with disabilities (PWDs) received special equipment, while women were supported with palliatives and empowerment initiatives during the August Meetings.

The Chairman also sponsors the monthly meetings of traditional rulers and president generals, strengthening grassroots governance. In addition, more than 250 Awgu indigenes have been employed through appointments, expanding opportunities for local talents.

Security and Peacebuilding: Building Trust and Stability

Under Hon. Okolo, security has remained a priority. The Council provides regular logistics support to the Police, DSS, Army, and Neighborhood Watch, ensuring that law enforcement agencies remain active.

Through dialogue and community engagement, the Chairman has promoted peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders, as well as among communities themselves. The creation of the Awgu Agro Rangers further underscores his proactive approach to security.

Awards and Recognition: A Chairman of Distinction

Hon. Uche Okolo’s transformational leadership has not gone unnoticed. In 2025, he was named one of the Distinguished Winners of the 23rd Rootswatch Local Government Chairman Merit Award, an honor reserved for leaders of uncommon vision.

He also bagged the Statesmanship Award from Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), recognizing his grassroots impact and leadership excellence.

These recognitions testify to a leader whose actions are not only felt in Awgu but also celebrated beyond.

A People-Focused Leadership in Sync with Gov. Mbah’s Vision

Every project and initiative under Hon. Okolo’s administration reflects the broader transformational agenda of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, particularly in the areas of disruptive innovation, inclusivity, and grassroots empowerment.

Looking Ahead: Awgu on the Rise

As Awgu marks one year of renewed leadership, the foundation for greater strides has been firmly laid. From roads to water, from education to agriculture, from security to community empowerment—the message is clear:

Awgu is rising. Awgu is glowing. Awgu is working again.
