The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Enugu State Chapter, has joined the global community to commemorate the International Women’s Day, urging women to support and uplift one another as a pathway to greater progress and societal impact.
The annual celebration, marked every March 8, recognizes the achievements, resilience, and contributions of women across different sectors of society.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Enugu, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Enugu State, Ngozi Ngene, announced that the association has adopted “Give to Gain” as its theme for the year. She explained that the theme emphasizes the importance of service, mentorship, collaboration, and mutual support among women in order to unlock broader opportunities and drive sustainable development.
Ngene, speaking on behalf of the executive and members of the association, said the initiative is designed to encourage women to invest in one another, support community development efforts, and contribute meaningfully to societal advancement.
She commended women in Enugu State and across Nigeria for their resilience and determination in breaking barriers and making significant contributions to national growth despite prevailing social and economic challenges.
The NAWOJ chairperson also highlighted the critical role of the media in amplifying women’s voices, promoting gender equality, and advocating policies that protect the rights and dignity of women and girls.
According to her, journalists, particularly women in the profession, have a responsibility to shape narratives that inspire inclusion, fairness, and opportunities for women in leadership, education, entrepreneurship, and governance.
Ngene therefore called on government institutions, private organizations, civil society groups, and community leaders to strengthen efforts aimed at eliminating gender-based discrimination while creating enabling environments for women to thrive.
She reaffirmed the commitment of NAWOJ Enugu State to using journalism, advocacy, and strategic engagement as tools for advancing the welfare, dignity, and empowerment of women and girls.
