Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized that standing committees would continue their work during the recess, focusing on ongoing budget defenses and coordination with the Committee on Appropriations. He called for prompt harmonization of the budget report to ensure a smooth passage when lawmakers return.

“I hope the Leader will put pressure on the Committee on Appropriations to harmonize the report of the 2026 Appropriation by that date. This is so that when we resume, we can try our best to pass the budget without requiring further concurrence or harmonization,” Akpabio said. “The House of Representatives has also adjourned to conclude budget processes and will meet on March 31. On that day, we hope to pass the national budget in tandem with the Senate.”

In a parallel development, the Senate confirmed several key federal appointments. Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar-Sadiq (rtd) was approved as National Commissioner representing the North East at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The confirmation followed a recommendation from the Committee on Electoral Matters, chaired by Senator Simon Lalong (APC, Plateau South), which highlighted her qualifications, experience, performance, and integrity.

Additionally, the Senate confirmed Usman Dakingari as Non-Career Ambassador and Ismail Yusuf as Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. These approvals came after the adoption of the Committee on Foreign Affairs’ report, led by Senator Bello Abubakar (APC, Niger North).

Senator Akpabio commended the committees for their diligent screening processes and expressed confidence that the new INEC Commissioner would strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system. He also praised President Bola Tinubu for appointing qualified women to strategic positions.

“I congratulate the nominees and wish them fruitful endeavors in their respective assignments. I also thank Mr. President for selecting the right people for the right appointments. Congratulations to all,” he added.
