In a press update issued after extensive consultations with the federal lawmaker and other critical stakeholders, the Council disclosed that fresh information available to it indicated that the incident may have largely resulted from communication gaps, heightened emotions, and the charged atmosphere that characterized the exercise.

According to the Council, Rt. Hon. Nnaji denied allegations of attacking journalists, explaining that his actions at the venue were aimed at creating enough visibility and space for candidates participating in the party’s primary election proceedings.

The NUJ described the misunderstanding as unfortunate and deeply regrettable, while urging journalists, political actors, supporters, and members of the public to de-escalate tensions and refrain from actions or statements capable of worsening the situation.

The Council noted that the lawmaker acknowledged the critical role of journalists as professionals carrying out constitutional responsibilities in the public interest and agreed that media practitioners should always be accorded the respect, protection, and unhindered access necessary for the discharge of their duties.

Reaffirming its commitment to press freedom and responsible journalism, the NUJ emphasized that the media and public office holders remain indispensable partners in strengthening democracy, promoting accountability, and advancing development in society.

The Council also commended the Chairman of the APC in Enugu State, Martin Chukwunweike, for his intervention and efforts in containing the situation and easing tensions as events unfolded during the exercise.

It further appreciated stakeholders across the state for their concerns, interventions, and constructive engagements since the incident occurred, noting that such responses reflected a collective commitment to democratic values, peace, and institutional harmony.

While reiterating its commitment to maintaining cordial and professional relationships with individuals and institutions, the NUJ Enugu State Council urged all parties to continue to uphold civility, mutual respect, and press freedom in future political engagements.

The statement was signed by the Chairman of the NUJ Enugu State Council, Comrade Obinna Ogbuka.
