In a Democracy Day message issued through his Special Adviser on General Media and Publicity, Hon. Tochukwu Chukwu, the council chairman paid glowing tribute to the nation’s democratic heroes whose sacrifices paved the way for Nigeria’s democratic freedoms and secured the right of citizens to freely choose their leaders.

Hon. Okolo stressed that the sacrifices made by these democratic icons must never be forgotten, noting that Nigerians have a collective responsibility to preserve and strengthen the country’s democratic heritage.

“The sacrifices of our democratic heroes must not be allowed to slip from our hands. Democracy remains one of the greatest gifts to our nation, and every citizen, especially our youths, must hold on to it seriously and responsibly,” he stated.

The Awgu council boss also used the occasion to commend the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, for what he described as exemplary leadership and outstanding service to the people of the state over the past three years.

According to Hon. Okolo, Governor Mbah’s administration has become a symbol of hope, progress, and transformation, delivering meaningful dividends of democracy across Enugu State.

“Governor Peter Mbah has lived up to the expectations of Ndi Enugu, giving democracy a true meaning in our state and embodying the principles of democracy in action. His achievements across various sectors stand as clear evidence of the dividends of democracy and are transforming Enugu into the state of our dreams—one that is rapidly becoming a destination of choice for investors,” he remarked.

The chairman highlighted the significant achievements of the Mbah administration in key sectors, including education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, economic development, social welfare, security, and tourism. He described these accomplishments as major milestones that continue to improve the living standards of residents across the state.

Hon. Okolo further applauded Governor Mbah for creating an enabling environment that empowers local government councils to effectively perform their responsibilities and contribute meaningfully to grassroots development.

He disclosed that the Awgu Local Government Administration has continued to complement the state government’s development efforts through several impactful projects. Among these is the successful installation of more than 20 solar-powered boreholes under the “Awgu Water for All” initiative, aimed at providing clean and accessible water to communities throughout the local government area.

The chairman also cited the construction and opening of access roads leading to Smart Green Schools across Awgu, describing the projects as critical interventions designed to improve accessibility and enhance quality education for students.

As Awgu joined the rest of the nation in commemorating Democracy Day 2026, Hon. Okolo called on citizens to reflect on the significance of their democratic rights and remain committed to strengthening democratic institutions.

“Democracy Day reminds us of our responsibility as elected representatives and reinforces our commitment to continually deliver the dividends of democracy to our people. Together, we must sustain the democratic ideals that promote development, accountability, and good governance,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the spirit of Democracy Day would inspire greater unity, increased civic participation, and collective efforts toward building a brighter and more prosperous future for all citizens.

According to him, the Democracy Day celebration in Awgu serves not only as a tribute to Nigeria’s democratic journey but also as a renewed call for sustained action toward achieving inclusive governance and sustainable development.
