In a message to commemorate June 12, the federal lawmaker described Democracy Day as an important moment for reflection on Nigeria’s democratic journey, the gains recorded over the years, and the collective responsibility of citizens in strengthening democratic governance.

Hon. Onwuegbu paid tribute to the men and women whose sacrifices and determination paved the way for the democratic freedoms enjoyed today, noting that their contributions continue to shape the country’s political development.

According to him, June 12 remains a symbol of the struggle for justice, freedom, and the right of the people to determine their political future through democratic means.

The lawmaker noted that democracy achieves its true purpose when leadership remains accountable, institutions function effectively, and government policies translate into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens.

“June 12 reflects the resilience of Nigerians and the enduring value of democratic governance. Beyond elections, democracy is about responsive leadership, equal opportunities, respect for the rule of law, and creating an environment where citizens can thrive,” he said.

Onwuegbu stressed the need for greater civic participation, describing active citizen engagement as essential to the growth and stability of the nation’s democracy. He encouraged Nigerians, particularly young people, to embrace patriotism, tolerance, and constructive involvement in public affairs.

While acknowledging the challenges facing the country, he expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to achieve greater progress through unity, responsible leadership, and a shared commitment to the common good.

He added that the country’s future depends largely on the strength of its institutions and the willingness of citizens to work together in advancing national development.

“As we mark Democracy Day, we should draw lessons from our democratic journey and continue to support efforts that promote good governance, strengthen institutions, expand opportunities, and improve the quality of life of our people,” he added.

The federal legislator further urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and united, expressing optimism that the country’s democratic system would continue to evolve in a manner that delivers greater prosperity, stability, and inclusive growth.

Hon. Onwuegbu concluded by felicitating with the people of Aninri, Awgu and Oji-River Federal Constituency, as well as Nigerians across the country, wishing them a peaceful and meaningful Democracy Day celebration.
