Aspirants of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Enugu State have rejected the party’s primary election process in the state, alleging hijack, manipulation, and exclusion of stakeholders.

Rising from a meeting held in Enugu on Monday, June 15, 2026, the Forum of Aspirants resolved that “no valid primary election was conducted in Enugu State,” stating that neither direct primaries nor consensus arrangements prescribed by the party’s 2027 guidelines and the Electoral Act 2026 were followed.

In a communiqué signed by 16 aspirants including Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, Chief VinMartin Obiora Ilo, Hon. Joseph Udedi, and Barr. Obiajulu Ujah, the group accused a “small clique” led by the State Party Leader, His Excellency Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, of hijacking party structures and truncating the primaries.

The aspirants passed a vote of no confidence on Dr. Nwodo; Mathias Omeh; Major-General Fidelis Azinta, rtd; and Mr. John Nwokeabia, citing “high-handedness, gross abuse of trust, partiality, lack of accountability, anti-party activities, and promoting aspirants who cannot win elections.”

They also condemned what they described as “excessive financial extortion and exploitation of aspirants,” adding that the entire nomination process “is lacking in transparency and shrouded in manipulation.”

The Forum consequently called on the NDC National Leadership under His Excellency Seriake Dickson to reject any candidate list submitted by the Nwodo-led leadership in Enugu State, describing it as “concocted without regard to the common good of the party.”

It also urged the leadership to compel Dr. Nwodo and his “hirelings” to recuse themselves from candidate nomination due to alleged compromise and set up an independent committee to supervise party activities in Enugu and ensure credible candidates emerge in line with party guidelines.

Grant urgent audience to aggrieved aspirants from the three Senatorial Zones.
Convene a high-level stakeholders’ meeting with NWC members, state leaders, and zone representatives to address threats to party unity.

Despite the grievances enumerated, the aspirants reaffirmed loyalty to the National Leader, His Excellency Seriake Dickson, the Presidential Candidate, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, and his running mate, His Excellency Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

“We remain committed to democracy, fairness, accountability, transparency, and building a strong political movement capable of winning Enugu State and Nigeria in 2027.”

The communiqué further warned that “good members of our great party are joining other parties in droves because of apparent injustice and lack of direction at Enugu West NDC.”
Efforts to get reactions from Dr. Nwodo and the state leadership were unsuccessful as of press time.
