The Red Chamber overwhelmingly approved the bill, with only one dissenting vote out of about 93 senators present during the session, signaling broad bipartisan support for the establishment of state-controlled policing in Nigeria.

In a related development, the Senate also passed the Police Trust Fund Repeal and Re-enactment Bill aimed at providing improved funding for the Nigeria Police Force and strengthening the nation’s security architecture.

The passage of the State Police Bill represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s long-standing efforts to create a more effective and decentralized policing system in response to the country’s evolving security challenges.

With the Senate’s approval, national discourse is expected to shift from the question of whether Nigeria should adopt state policing to the modalities for its implementation, operational framework, funding, and oversight mechanisms.
